Assisi Tours

Assisi is a beautiful place of Umbria with a prominent religious role at world level, the medieval city under UNESCO protection with marvelous churches and a large number of pilgrims from around the world.

Our tour usually begins with a visit to the baroque basilica Santa Maria degli Angeli. The interior you can find small ‘Porziuncola’ church, place most loved by St. Francis and where he died in 1226. After a short break, we continue entering the city through the Porta Nuova gate and the street that will take you ahead to the beautiful Basilica of St. Clare.  St.Clare was a follower and friend of St. Francis and their relics are inside the church walls. All building and very impressive because it is built in pink and white stone, with the square in front always full of people and spectacular views of the Umbrian valley.

City tour continues walk up to the town square, where you can see the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo and the ancient Roman Temple of Minerva. At the end of your medieval trip, you will arrive to the Basilica of Saint Francis, the patron saint of the city, made of two churches (1230 – 1253), lower and upper, with the crypt (the saint’s tomb) excavated in 1818. Pisano, Cimabue, Giotto , Simone Martini, the greatest artists at that time, they painted the walls and ceilings of the basilica.

Our suggestions for lunch are: restaurant “Metastasio” at Asissi with the beautiful view of the valley and the city, or the second possibility, is that after the visit of the basilica to drive to Spello, for the lunch and wine tasting at enoteca “Properzio” (recommended!).

After lunch, the tour will take in Deruta, known worldwide for its ancient ceramics origin and the numerous testimonies, kept in major museums or private collections, document how the pottery was produced seamlessly, from the Middle Ages to today. Between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, Deruta and become an extraordinary phenomenon of monoeconomy thanks to hard work and competence of local artisans.

If desired, we will take you to the workshop where his staff will make you a little tour. So you can to understand the hand-made pottery production and his love for this work, for this lifestyle. At the end of our tour we will visit beautiful Sanctuary Madonna del Bagno which has the facade decorated with wonderful tiles.
